Awhile ago I tried to start a blog. I didn't really like it, but this time I am being more specific about what I'm going to talk about. First of all, let me explain the title of my blog. My Universe Sits In Chocolate is simply an acronym for music- unfortunately this blog probably won't have anything to do with chocolate or how I think my universe sits in it, as interesting and strange as that sounds. I could have gone with Mice Usually Stay Inside Cupboards, or Matt Uh Smith Icy Clay but one sounds dull and the other sounds nonsensical.
The name I chose for it is actually quite fitting, as strange as that may seem. I love music, I really love music. It's one of my greatest joys and interests in life and, though, as with anything in this world, it will not be completely satisfying, I am constantly amazed and fascinated by the new things (and the old) that I hear. And so, in a way, my universe does sit in chocolate- in the way that chocolate is satisfying and rich and deep and complicated and simple and... well, it's chocolate. And music is like that for me and it's everywhere in my life.
To specify it a little more, I will be 'reviewing' soundtracks to movies. Soundtracks is probably one of my favorite versions of music. I don't mean type, because that would be referring to classical, jazz, pop, rock, alternative, religious and just about anything you can come up with. And soundtracks can be any of those, depending, of course, on the movie. And that's one reason why I like soundtracks, because there are a wide variety of styles and they are often taken to levels that can't always be reached, one reason being that, in order to make music that works with something that's happening in a movie, the music or the specific song, even the main theme, has to have definite direction. This makes a great many styles: classical, jazz, pop etc. more defined.
I am looking forward to it, I think, although I have no idea how far it's going to take me. I'll be reviewing movies that I've seen and soundtracks that I've especially noticed. I don't know if I'll ever go beyond that.
I realize now that I should probably give a bit of background of my own music experience. In short, I'm an orchestra person, meaning that I prefer that sound to band or jazz, and I probably favor the violin section, because that's where I was when I was (for a short time) in an orchestra. I was trained in classical music and I can appreciate it, but I am extremely choosy about that style of music. I do not technically know any music theory, although I am working on learning more of it, and I simply did my best to play what I was told, or improvised when I could manage it and no one was looking. And that's pretty much my musical experience, unprofessional but with a bit of decoration and an inch amount of street-smart. But I love music.
So, let's see where this thing takes me.......
